How to show up in ChatGPT answers (without gaming it)
You can't pay or ask to be cited in ChatGPT. Here's how its search picks sources, what you can influence, and how to measure the visits it sends.

Short answer
You can't pay for a spot in ChatGPT or request one. When ChatGPT searches the web, it pulls results from third-party search providers and OpenAI's own crawler, then cites pages that answer the question clearly. Let OpenAI's search crawler in, make sure Bing has indexed you, write pages that state facts plainly, and track the visits that arrive tagged

Clients ask us how to rank in ChatGPT about once a week now. It's a fair question. Your customers are asking ChatGPT which accountant to call or which software to shortlist, and you want to be in the answer. The honest answer has two halves. There's no ranking dial you can turn, and anyone selling "guaranteed ChatGPT placement" is selling something OpenAI says doesn't exist. But there's real, unglamorous work that makes you much more likely to be found, read and cited. Most of it is ordinary good SEO done properly, with a few new details.
How ChatGPT decides what to cite
ChatGPT answers in two different ways, and it helps to know which one you're dealing with.
From what the model already knows. Many answers come straight from the model's training, with no live search at all. You can't edit that directly. It reflects what was written about you across the web before the model was trained.
From a live web search. When a question needs current or specific information, ChatGPT searches. OpenAI's help article on ChatGPT search describes the steps. It rewrites the question into search queries (their example turns "good restaurants near me" into "top restaurants San Francisco"), sends those to its search partners, reads the pages that come back, and writes an answer with citations you can click.
Where do those results come from? At launch, OpenAI said ChatGPT search draws on third-party search providers plus content from partners. OpenAI doesn't publish the full list. Microsoft did say in 2023 that Bing would be the default search experience inside ChatGPT, and Bing is widely understood to be one of those providers, though OpenAI hasn't spelled out how much weight it carries. OpenAI also runs its own search crawler, OAI-SearchBot. So the practical reading is: be easy to find in Bing, and don't block OpenAI's crawler.
What you can't influence
It's worth being clear about this, because it's where most of the snake oil lives.
- You can't buy your way into the answer. OpenAI's help article says plainly that "placement is not guaranteed." ChatGPT has started testing ads, but OpenAI says they're clearly labeled, kept separate, and "do not influence the answers". An ad is an ad. It isn't a citation.
- There is no fixed rank. The same question asked by two people, or worded two ways, can produce different answers and different sources. A screenshot of you appearing once proves very little.
- You can't control the wording. ChatGPT summarizes. It may describe you accurately, vaguely, or not at all, depending on what it finds.
If someone promises a position in ChatGPT, ask them how they'd prove it. They can't, because the thing they're promising doesn't exist in a stable form.
How to rank in ChatGPT: the parts you control
"Rank" is the wrong word, but it's the one people search for. Here's what actually moves the needle on being found and cited.
1. Let OpenAI's search crawler in
OpenAI's crawler documentation lists three user agents, and they do different jobs:
OAI-SearchBotsurfaces sites in ChatGPT's search features. Sites that block it won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers.GPTBotcrawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's models. Blocking it does not remove you from search.ChatGPT-Userfetches a page when a person in ChatGPT asks it to.
You can allow search and opt out of training. Your robots.txt would look like this:
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /Whether to block training is a business decision, not an SEO one. What matters here is that OAI-SearchBot isn't blocked, either in robots.txt or by a firewall or CDN rule that quietly turns away bots. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to take effect. Check with whoever runs your hosting, because bot-blocking defaults have become common.
2. Make sure Bing has indexed you
Plenty of sites have never logged into Bing Webmaster Tools. It takes ten minutes: you can import your sites from Google Search Console, submit your sitemap, and see which pages Bing has actually indexed. If your service pages aren't in Bing's index, they're unlikely to be found by any assistant that leans on Bing.
While you're there, consider IndexNow, a simple protocol Bing supports that pings search engines when a page changes. Many CMSs and plugins can send it automatically.
3. Write pages that answer the question in the first lines
When ChatGPT reads your page, it's looking for the passage that answers the question it was asked. Pages that bury the answer under a hero slogan and three paragraphs of "we're passionate about" are harder to quote.
- Put a direct answer near the top of the page, in plain sentences.
- Use headings that match real questions: "How much does a kitchen remodel cost in Denver?" beats "Our Philosophy."
- State the facts people compare on: what you do, where, for whom, price ranges, turnaround, credentials.
- Keep important content in HTML text. Text inside images, PDFs-only, or content that only loads after a click is harder for any crawler to use.
4. Make your business facts consistent everywhere
An assistant pieces together who you are from your site, your Google Business Profile, your Bing Places listing, directories, and other people's pages. If your name, address, phone number, services and service area disagree from source to source, you're harder to describe confidently. Tidy them up. Our post on Bing Places and Apple Business Connect covers the listings people tend to forget.
5. Be mentioned by other people
This is the part SEO veterans will recognize. ChatGPT cites pages it finds through search, and search results favor businesses other sites talk about. Industry directories, local press, association member pages, podcast show notes, partner pages and reviews all add up. You can't fake this sustainably, but you can earn it: be useful, show up in your industry, and make it easy for others to describe what you do.
6. Keep the technical basics clean
Fast pages, working links, a sitemap, sensible titles, and no accidental noindex tags. None of this is new. It still matters because a page that can't be crawled can't be cited.
How to measure ChatGPT referrals
You can't see a "ChatGPT ranking report," but you can see the traffic.
Check your analytics for chatgpt.com. OpenAI's publisher FAQ says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends people through. In GA4, look under Traffic acquisition for that source. We walk through a full setup, including other assistants, in how to measure ChatGPT and AI search traffic in GA4.
Look at Bing's new report, with care. In February 2026 Bing launched an AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools (public preview) that shows how often your pages are cited in Copilot and AI answers in Bing. It's not a ChatGPT report, but it's real citation data from a related ecosystem.
Ask new leads. Add "ChatGPT or another AI tool" as an option on your "How did you hear about us?" field. Some people will read an answer, then search your name on Google. That shows up as branded search, not as a ChatGPT referral.
Spot-check, but don't obsess. Asking ChatGPT your key questions every month is a reasonable sanity check. Treat the results as anecdotes, not rankings.
Where to start
If we were starting from zero on a small business site, this is the order we'd go in:
- Check robots.txt and your firewall settings so
OAI-SearchBotcan reach the site. - Set up Bing Webmaster Tools, submit the sitemap, and confirm your key pages are indexed.
- Claim or clean up your Bing Places and Google Business Profile listings so the basics match.
- Rewrite the top of your five most important pages so each answers its main question in the first two or three sentences.
- Add a "ChatGPT / AI tool" option to your lead form and a
chatgpt.comview in analytics. - Then do the slow work: earn mentions on sites your customers already trust.
That's not a hack. It's the same foundation that helps you in Google, which is the point we make in SEO vs GEO: most of what works for AI answers is good SEO with the answers moved to the top.
Frequently asked questions
Does blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT search?
No. OpenAI's documentation treats them separately. GPTBot is for model training; OAI-SearchBot is for search. Blocking only GPTBot keeps you eligible for search answers.
Do I need an llms.txt file to show up in ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI's publisher guidance doesn't ask for one. It's cheap to add and we serve one ourselves, but it isn't a ranking factor. We explain the proposal in what is llms.txt.
Can I submit my site to ChatGPT?
There's no submission form for ordinary websites. Being crawlable by OAI-SearchBot and indexed in the search engines it draws on is how you become eligible.
If you'd like a second pair of eyes on your crawl settings, listings and key pages, that's exactly the kind of work our SEO and local SEO team does every week. No guarantees about ChatGPT, because nobody can honestly give one, just the groundwork that gives you a real chance.
